As one of our Health Opportunities for patients, Our Family Doctor is proud to be a part of the Reach Out and Read program since 2018– Carolinas Coalition https://www.rorcarolinas.org/why-reach-out-and-read/. Our Care Manager, Brandy coordinates all elements of the program internally with the team and our patients/families. Reach Out and Read providers and their care teams give books to children well-child visits from infancy until they start school. The provider also communicates with parents about the benefits of the program and encourages families to read aloud together. The provider explains how the best opportunity to influence a child’s future is in the first five years, a critical window of rapid brain development that does not occur at any other time. The effectiveness of the Reach Out and Read model is recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics in a policy statement that recommends early literacy promotion as an essential component of pediatric care.
