When I think about the word “portal” I often conjure up images of a classic TV show like Star Trek or a movie like Thor where space travelers hurtle through some kind of vortex to another place or another dimension. At Our Family Doctor, while we can promise that you will not be hurled into another dimension when you step through our door, we are happy to share with you that the OFD Patient Portal is now operational and ready for your use.

I last mentioned this idea of a portal back in my March 2013 blog post when it was in the planning stages. For the patients who have recently signed on to their free, password protected OFD Patient Portal, they have already learned of the great potential for this new service. These patients have been able to securely view parts of their medical record for accuracy and reference, gain access to their lab results, request copies of their medical records and make administrative and billing inquiries to the OFD staff. All of this can be done from the comfort of their homes, or wherever their portable electronic devices take them – all without picking up the phone.

In the future, OFD will likely add more functionality to the portal, but for now even with its modest beginnings, patients are very excited about this new tool. In addition to the convenience that the portal offers patients, when the portal is used regularly, our practice can save trees by using far less paper as we ‘push’ clinical summaries after office visits and lab letters through the portal, which in the past we would print and/or mail.

So what do you say? Are you ready to further enhance your connectedness to your Family Doctor? Great, it’s very easy. All you need to do is make sure that OFD has your current email address, and we will mail you an e-invite (you can call or email the office with this information if you think we don’t have it). In some cases, you may have already gotten this email invite (maybe it’s languishing in your inbox or junk mail folder) to which we would ask – what are you waiting for? Sign on, it’s fun, it’s easy, it’s informative, it saves paper, and you too can begin to use the latest technology connecting patients to their doctors at Our Family Doctor.
